The Claddagh is a beautiful Irish symbol that features two hands clasping a heart. A crown sits atop the heart that the hands are clasping. Each aspect of the Claddagh represents something. The hands represent friendship, the heart is a symbol of love, and the crown symbolizes loyalty. A Claddagh ring, therefore, makes a beautiful token of friendship and/or love. According to Wikipedia, the expression associated with the Claddagh symbol is: « With my hands I give you my heart, and crown it with my love. » If you, or your partner, are of Irish descent, a Claddagh ring would make a wonderful wedding ring.

Claddagh rings can be made elaborately with fine detail and added gemstones, or can be a simply made of gold or silver. Finding the right ring wont be hard. Just do a web search of the words « Claddagh rings » and see the list appear. A birthstone makes a very nice addition to a traditional Claddagh ring. The birthstone is placed in the heart, and looks very nice, without taking away from the traditional appearance.

According to legend, the first ring was crafted by Richard Joyce, a Goldsmith, who lived in a small Irish fishing village called Claddagh. When Richard Joyce was kidnapped at sea by Mediterranean pirates, and later sold to a Moorish Goldsmith, he spent his time mastering his craft. Then, in 1689, King William II was able to negotiate the return of Richard Joyce, and other slaves like him. Joyce was able to return home to Ireland where a young women had waited faithfully for his return. Upon his return, Joyce presented the his faithful love with the first Claddagh ring. These two later married. The tradition of the Claddagh ring was born.

There is also symbolism regarding how the Claddagh ring is worn. If the ring is worn on the right hand, with the crown and heart facing out, it is a symbol that the ring wearer is not taken. However, if the heart and crown are facing inward, it means that the wearer is taken. If the ring is worn on the left hand, with the crown and heart facing inward, it is a symbol that the wearer is married. Thus said, single women would want to always wear their ring on their right hand. If you're looking for love, then you would place the heart and crown facing outward.

Aside from rings, the Claddagh symbol can be found on many other jewelry and household items. Pendants and bracelets are very popular selections, as are home decorating items that reflect the Irish symbol. This reminder of friendship and love has been etched on drinking glasses, picture frames, and tea sets, so that the tradition can live on in homes all over the world.

Upgrades that add value to a home are the types of expenditures that cause homeowners to dig just a bit deeper into their pockets. Home upgrades costs that can be recovered vary from year to year, and the 2009/2010 home selling season is no different.

Home Upgrades Costs That Can Be Recovered

Midrange projects have their shares of winners and losers. Remodeling Magazine outlines that the 2009/2010 season has six distinct winners (as compared to the 2008/2009 term):

  1. Attic bedroom projects maxing out at $49,346
  2. The addition of a backup power generator that costs no more than $14,304
  3. Basement remodels that stay under $62,067
  4. Fiberglass entry door replacements for no more than $3,490
  5. Steel entry door replacement costs that do not top $1,172
  6. Replacing the Roof for no more than $19,731

While these are upgrades that add value to a home, the figures above represent national averages. For example, a roof replacement – in the Los Angeles area – is significantly cheaper, depending on the size of the home and the materials used.

What Are Good Upgrades to Do On Your Home That Increase the Value the Most?

From the standpoint of recouping the cost, the front door replacement with a steel model is perhaps the one expenditure that offers more return than was initially invested. With a resale value of $1,470, it features a return of investment that almost reaches 129 percent.

The lowest return on investment is the backup power generator. Recouping only about $8,428 (or almost 59 percent), it represents the lowest winning midrange home upgrade.

Biggest Losers: Midrange Home Upgrades That Feature the Lowest Return on Investment in 2009/2010

The three least profitable home upgrades – as compared to last year – are somewhat surprising:

  1. Sunroom additions that cost less than $73,167 only provide a resale value of $37,118 (or 50.7 percent)
  2. Home office remodels that cost up to $28,375 only bring in about $13,648, which translates into a little over 48 percent
  3. The bathroom addition that stays under $39,046 may net about 59.5 percent ($23,233)

While these are upgrades that add value to a home in the eyes of some buyers, they do not show an upward trend in buyer interest. Thus, these upgrades may either become money pits or continue to play second fiddle to the more popular upgrades mentioned above.

Midrange Home Upgrades Costs That Can Still Be Recovered, Even Though They Are On the Way Down

Even though these home upgrades are waning in popularity, homeowners can still recoup their expenses at this time. The future home seller who is planning out some home improvements now should think long and hard if he wants to include them in the process, simply because their popularity is currently hitting a downward spiral.

The top three home upgrades that are currently featuring a downward trend are:

  1. Wood deck additions that stay under $10,634 can still recoup 80.6 percent ($8,573)
  2. Vinyl siding replacements costing about $10,607 offer a return of almost 80 percent ($8,486)
  3. Minor kitchen remodels that stay well beneath $21,411 provide a resale value of only $16,773 or 78.3 percent

The latter point is a bit of a surprise to the homeowner who has thus far believed that a kitchen remodel was the quintessential money-maker of all the home upgrades possible.

Seven years ago, with the price of gasoline getting beyond the point I wanted to pay, I decided to look at my options. I'd been in the automotive business as an award winning professional race car driver in both drag racing and road racing, a highly successful race car and high-end sports car mechanic and I'd owned seven auto parts and service facilities in Oregon and Hawaii. I knew what I wanted. The Internet was coming of age, so I started looking.

I knew some things, but not a lot, about hydrogen. I knew it only took a small amount to enhance the properties of other fuels. I knew it would work with gas, natural gas, propane or diesel. And, I knew that people had been generating hydrogen on a small scale for personal use using various methods for quite a few years.

I searched the Internet and gave up after awhile. I resumed my searching when gas prices spiked again. The problem I found was, no one was offering anything that would do what I wanted at a price that wasn't outrageously high and, I knew from my automotive experiences, all had some serious, inherent problems.

I'd read about the different solutions that most people were using and decided that potassium hydroxide, more commonly known as drain cleaner, acids and other caustic chemicals, were too dangerous. If you get them on the paint of the car, it's gone or severely bleached out. Getting those type chemicals on the skin can cause burns and, in the eyes, they can blind you. Not for me, so I started looking concerning that aspect of the project too. I found an alternative that works as good, and is safe enough to be ingested.

My first home made hydrogen generator was made using a stainless steel container. The interior of the container began corroding almost immediately. A friend, and longtime professional welder, told me the best stainless was made in Italy. It took a while but, eventually, I found a container that would work. The Italian stainless was superior to what I'd been using, but still not satisfactory. With the electrolyte I was using, I didn't need some super expensive, exotic container, so I decided to use Lexan®.

In order to increase the fuel economy, most people either make the engine smaller, which generally means less horsepower, or make the car smaller and/or lighter. I wasn't in the car manufacturing or, from scratch, engine building, so I had to find a different process. I figured by using race car engine techniques, I could increase the MPG through more efficient use of the same amount of fuel.

Sixty to eighty percent of the fuel that goes in the engine is used for cooling the pistons, valves and other internal engine components. If I went too lean on the mixture, I'd burn a piston or other engine part and destroy the engine. Plus, hydrogen burns very hot, which would increase the problem. There was another way that cooled the parts efficiently and made the engine run cooler and, as an extra plus, gave it more horsepower. I tried it, it worked, so I incorporated it into my basic design.

Now, I had Lexan ® bottles, an electrolyte that wasn't destructive to man, beast and automobile finishes and an additional bonus for cooling and increasing efficiency.

The next step entailed getting what I had in bottles and jars, into the engine. My experience has been that the simpler the system, the less likely it is to cause problems and the better it will be in the long run. Many people believe that everything has to be complicated or it won't work. In almost every case, the exact opposite is true.

I've written health articles for 25 years and that's required reading ten's of thousands of pages of research information and then boiling down what I found so my readers could understand the doctorese. I've used much of what I've found in my personal quest for health and it always turns out that the simple stuff works best. From cars to cosmos, there are a few rules that pertain to all things. This project proved no different.

With that in mind, I eliminated any ideas about sophisticated computer controls, injection and things that go clunk, and breakdown, in the night. The only drawback is, the system uses vacuum to deliver the hydrogen and other components, and it won't work with supercharged or turbocharged engines. The engine has to be naturally aspirated.

Three years ago, after a lot of blind alleys, I came up with a highly successful unit. Our personal cars had gotten from twenty-two to fifty percent increases in MPG. People began asking if I'd teach them what I knew. I did and they were happy with the results of their installations. But, another problem arose. I didn't have time to teach and have a personal life. I'd stopped teaching health for the same reason a few years before. I was back to options.

My answer to the problem was to do one more workshop and have my son video it for me. We made a DVD, that's an exact copy of a workshop, plus new information. Since I build websites for others, I built a website for the DVD. Now, I can sell the DVD for a reasonable price, guarantee that it will work and my customer can use it on their personal car(s) and/or install the system for others and make a good living doing it.
Simple, it only took five years of testing and research.

The environment benefits, my customers save on gas and the entire system can be built at home, with basic hand tools, for under fifty dollars plus the $12.95 DVD and shipping costs. I'm happy. Everything needed is available at most hardware stores, like Lowe's or Home Depot, and some, but not all, is available at Wal Mart. Check out www.mileageman1.com for more information.

Coleman Generators

With all the storms and power outages across the country, many people have been looking at purchasing a home standby generator system. I had purchased a portable generator a few years ago and had wired in a manual generator transfer switch, figuring this was giving me a margin of safety. Unfortunately, my plans for being prepared fell apart when the time came for everything to actually work.

I try to purchase American made products whenever possible so choosing a Coleman Powermate generator made me feel comfortable. Little did I know that Coleman Powermate had filed for bankruptcy and parts are no longer available.

This summer, a major power outage occurred with the high winds of Hurricane Ike, lasting for several days. No problem, I'll start the portable generator and with 2 days worth of gasoline, we won't have any problem waiting for the main power to be restored. Wrong! The generator ran for 6 hours before the generator head overheated and burned out the stator. That is when I found out about the bankruptcy. No parts available anywhere for Coleman Powermate generators. I also discovered the generator heads for these generators were made in china much to my disgust. That might account for their financial problems.

The wait for the power to come back on finally was over and I had determined that a home standby unit had to be a better option. After 3 days of research, I had narrowed my choice down to a Generac Guardian or a Briggs and Stratton unit. The deal breaker was the weekly exercise feature. The Generac had this feature, the Briggs did not. I am like most people who have the best of intentions. I mean to start the generator every week like the manual suggests, but things seem to get in the way. The Generac does this automatically every week for 12 minutes and then shuts down. One less thing to worry about……

I called Ziller Electric in Michigan and within 3 days, the generator arrived. Being a large, heavy unit, I suggest having several friends or a forklift available to help move it. Generac does a great job with their installation manuals. The unit I ordered had a pre-wired transfer switch, which made installation very easy.

I removed the old manual transfer switch from the breaker panel and wired in the new automatic transfer system. If you follow the manuals step by step, it makes perfect sense how this unit works and be sure to follow the safety warning in the manual. Opening up a breaker box can be intimidating if you have never attempted this before, so be certain the main power is off before removing the cover. All the wiring is color-coded and marked with the locations, so if you take your time and follow the manual, you will not have any problems. If you are in doubt about your abilities, seek the help of a professional.

I elected to power this generator by natural gas, so this involved installing a natural gas line from the existing gas appliances to the generator. Again, this is not as difficult as it may seem, but if you are in doubt about your abilities, seek the help of a professional.

Everything has been tested and operational now for a month with no issues at all. If you are looking for a quality home standby generator at a fair price, I highly recommend the Generac Guardian Series.

There is little doubt among campers, home owners, and small business owners that the reliability of Yamaha Generators is unparalleled. With the summer season hitting its high point and the hurricane season in full swing, the need for a good generator is high in many households. The generator market is filled with competitive offerings, though Yamaha, Honda, and Coleman seem to be industry leaders. For consumers, the most important factors in choosing a generator are watt capacity, reliability, and price. For all three, Yamaha has a variety of options to fulfill any consumer’s needs. In particular, two models highlight the diversity of Yamaha’s offerings.

The Yamaha EF1000 Generator can be used best for limited usage, including additional power to one or two machines around the house or in the office. While the advertised running time is six hours, the actual running time typical runs from three to four hours depending on the size or amount of machines running on the generator. Consumers have complained about the decibel level on the EF1000, though this is a common problem across the industry. At around $500, this generator is a good emergency option for households and is more reasonably priced than its competitors. The Yamaha EF1000 generator cements the strong reputation for the reliability of Yamaha generators.

The Yamaha YG28001 Industrial Generator is considered by many to be the most efficient, lightest, and quietest in its class. At around 70 pounds, the YG28001 packs a big punch with 2800 watts of capacity. While the cost may be prohibitive to the more casual consumer, at $1300, it is still incredibly cost efficient. The greatest testimonial to the reliability of Yamaha generators in general, and the YG28001 specifically, was its extensive use by Florida households during the hurricane season of 2005. Therefore, those who want to ensure that they will have power in case of an emergency should consider the YG28001.

While competitors like Honda and Coleman may provide lower prices on their products, there is no substitute for the reliability of Yamaha generators. With similar capacity and a greater reputation for durability, Yamaha’s generators should be mainstays in every home concerned with power outages and natural disasters. Considering the development of smaller generators like the EF1000 and larger generators like the YG28001, the future certainly looks bright for Yamaha.

Did you know you can build a magnet powered machine to generate your own free electricity for use in your home? Not only is this alternate energy free, it is sustainable energy. It has no emissions and is completely environmentally friendly.

Many people are doing this already and the good news is this: you don't need to be an electrical engineer or a millionaire to build your own generator.

Introducing the John Christie Generator

It all started back in 2001, when two inventive Australians stunned the world by introducing a prototype for what is thought to be the first mass-market free energy generator. John Christie and Lou Britts named their machine the Lutec 1000 because it supposedly generated 1000W of electricity. The John Christie Generator attracted considerable controversy, with some alleging the machine was a hoax and saying it violated the laws of physics. Others claimed it did what the inventors said it did, but was being squelched by special interest groups with much to lose by the introduction of free power generators.

Whether the Lutec 1000 was the real deal or not remains to be seen. However, since that time, billions of dollars have gone into research and development of machines based on the same principle at the Lutec 1000.

How Does The Free Energy Machine Work?

Standard electricity generators are fuel driven. The Lutec and other machines of its ilk can run without an ongoing fuel supply. They require no fossil fuel, hydro or other fuels, but instead, they harness magnetic energy. As you know, magnets repulse and attract certain metals. This natural magnetic force that moves metals is the machine's driving force to generate electricity.

The Lutec 1000 requires a battery to initiate its endless cycle of motion.

Is It Perpetual Motion?

As far as most of us are concerned, yes, it is. To be completely factual, the magnets, according to Britts and Christie, would last for approximately a thousand years and the batteries need replacing twice a decade.

As you can see, the maintenance on a free energy magnetic power generator is next to nothing. Although it is not completely perpetual motion, given the thousand year limit, the machine can produce sufficient energy to power a home. Not only that, it can be transported from one location to another, the same way that fuel-generated electricity is transported.

Locating a John Christie Machine

The Lutec 1000 is not available commercially, at least not at the time of this writing. However, in the years following news of its existence, gigantic inroads occurred in magnetic motor generating technology. Within the next ten years, experts predict that numerous similar consumer devices will come into the market, and they will not break the budget to purchase.

Why Not Build Your Own?

If you area bit of a Mr. or Mrs. Fix-It, you probably have the expertise to build your own power generator using magnets. The technology is simple enough for the ordinary person to grasp, and the supplies are for sale at any hardware shop. You can build your own alternate energy source in your basement or garage.

People who have gone this route relate many advantages. Some are saving as much as one hundred per cent of their power bill, and others are even selling the surplus to their local power supply company. Not only is this electricity free, is it renewable, releases no toxins into the environment and is environmentally friendly.

Kits and guides are available to help you get started building your own free energy generator.

One of the great advantages of this generator is that you can not only generate enough electricity for your own needs but you can also sell any excess that you don't use back to the grid and get paid for it!
